Contagious Diseases Honor

Household Arts

Requirements

  1. With the help of an adult, learn what epidemics and pandemics are and tell a story about one of them.

Answer: An epidemic is when a disease spreads quickly and reaches a lot of people in a city or region. A pandemic is when that disease spreads across several countries, almost the whole world. A famous example is the Covid-19 pandemic, when many people stayed home and wore masks to protect themselves. — The difference is in the size: an epidemic is in one region and a pandemic reaches the whole world.

  2. With the help of an adult, learn what quarantine and social isolation are. Name three activities to pass the time during quarantine/social isolation, one of them being with the family.

Answer: Quarantine is staying apart from other people for a while so you don't catch or pass on a disease. Social isolation is avoiding crowds and staying home more, away from lots of people. Three activities to pass the time: 1) Read books or draw; 2) Do exercises and play inside the house; 3) Play a board game with the family (a family activity). — Staying apart from people helps stop the disease from spreading.

  3. What are vaccines and why are they important? Choose one of the activities below to carry out with your parents:
    • Take a photo of your vaccination card and present it to your leader.
    • Name three important vaccines for children in their first year of life.

Answer: Vaccines are special medicines, which we get through a little shot or drops, and which teach our body to defend itself against diseases before we get sick. They are important because they protect us and keep dangerous diseases from spreading. Three important vaccines in the first year of life are: 1) BCG (protects against severe forms of tuberculosis); 2) the MMR vaccine or the polio vaccine (infantile paralysis); 3) the hepatitis B vaccine. — The vaccine prepares the body to defend itself, keeping the child from getting sick.

  4. With the help of an adult, demonstrate the correct way to:
    • Wash your hands
    • Sneeze
    • Cough
    • Wear a mask
    • Use hand sanitizer gel

Answer: Do it with an adult, showing each step: 1) Washing hands: wet them, apply soap, scrub the palm, the back, between the fingers, and the nails for about 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice), rinse, and dry. 2) Sneezing: cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow (or a tissue that you throw away afterward). 3) Coughing: cover your mouth with your elbow, never with an open hand. 4) Wearing a mask: wash your hands first, cover your nose and mouth, adjust it by the elastic bands, and don't keep touching it. 5) Hand sanitizer: squeeze out a little and rub it on both hands, between the fingers, until it dries. — These simple precautions keep germs from passing from one person to another.

  5. With the help of an adult, carry out the following activities:
    • Make a poster with instructions on how to avoid the spread of contagious diseases.
    • Make a mask and explain the importance of its use.
    • Make a drawing, small gift, or a thank-you letter to a health professional, and send it to them.
    • Take a photo with your family wearing masks.

Answer: Do each part with an adult helping: 1) Poster: on a piece of poster board, write and draw tips like "wash your hands," "wear a mask," and "cover your mouth when you cough." 2) Mask: with fabric or paper, make a mask and explain that it helps keep germs from spreading through the nose and mouth. 3) Thank-you: make a drawing, a little letter, or a small gift for a doctor, nurse, or health worker, and hand it to them or send it. 4) Photo: gather the family, everyone wearing masks, and take a nice photo to remember it. — Creating, giving thanks, and recording it helps you learn and value those who care for our health.

  6. What will happen to diseases when we go to Heaven? Revelation 21:4

Answer: In Heaven there will be no more disease. The verse in Revelation 21:4 says that God will wipe away every tear from our eyes and there will be no more death, nor sadness, nor crying, nor pain. This means no one will ever get sick; everyone will be happy and healthy forever beside Jesus. — Revelation 21:4 promises a place with no pain, no disease, and no death, beside God.
