Gardener Honor

Household Arts

Requirements

  1. Describe the activities of a gardener.

    Answer: The gardener takes care of the plants and the garden: they prepare the soil, plant seeds and seedlings, water, fertilize (put food in the soil), pull out the weeds and the bad plants, prune the dry branches, and keep everything clean and beautiful so the plants grow healthy. — The gardener does everything the plants need to sprout and grow well.

  2. Name three different types of agricultural crops and describe what grows in each one.

    Answer: 1) Vegetable garden: vegetables grow, such as lettuce, tomato, carrot, and kale. 2) Orchard: trees that give fruit grow, such as orange, mango, banana, and apple. 3) Crop field (large plantation): grains and cereals grow, such as corn, beans, rice, and soybeans. — Each type of cultivation is used to plant a different group of foods.

  3. Discover three gardens mentioned in the Bible and memorize the book, chapter, and verse where they are found.

    Answer: 1) The Garden of Eden, where God placed Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:8). 2) The Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed before He was arrested (Matthew 26:36). 3) The garden where Jesus was buried and rose again (John 19:41). Memorize the name of the book, the chapter, and the verse of each one. — The Bible talks about important gardens, from the beginning of creation to the resurrection of Jesus.

  4. Name at least five gardening tools.

    Answer: Five gardening tools are: 1) shovel (or hand trowel), 2) hoe, 3) rake, 4) watering can, and 5) pruning shears. Gloves, a wheelbarrow, and a hose also count. — These tools help you dig, plant, water, and take care of the garden.

  5. Demonstrate that you know how to use, care for, and clean these tools in a hands-on activity in the garden.

    Answer: With an adult: 1) Put on gloves and use each tool for a task (the shovel to dig, the watering can to water, the rake to gather leaves). 2) Use them carefully, always pointing the sharp parts away from people. 3) At the end, take the soil off the tools, wash them, dry them well so they don't rust, and store them in a dry, safe place. — Using and cleaning the tools properly makes them last longer and keeps everyone safe.

  6. Do three of the following gardening activities, in a flowerbed, pot, box, tree-fern plank, or can:
    • Prepare the soil;
    • Fertilize;
    • Sow;
    • Plant and transplant;
    • Water;
    • Remove weeds.

    Answer: Choose three and do them with an adult. Preparing the soil: loosen the soil with the trowel and remove the stones. Fertilizing: mix fertilizer or compost into the soil. Sowing: make a little hole, place the seed, and cover it lightly. Planting/transplanting: move the seedling carefully into the pot or flower bed and firm up the soil. Watering: water slowly in the morning or in the late afternoon. Removing weeds: pull the weeds out by the root, with gloves. — By doing these tasks you learn hands-on how to care for a plant from beginning to end.
