Gymnast Honor

Recreational Activities

Requirements

  1. Have the Physical Fitness Honor.

    Answer: It is a prerequisite — before doing this specialty you need to have earned the Physical Fitness Specialty. — Physical Fitness teaches how to take care of your body, an important foundation for gymnastics.

  2. Know and perform at least five different types of warm-up exercises.

    Answer: Five simple warm-up exercises are: 1) Jumping jacks (jumping while opening and closing your arms and legs); 2) Running or marching in place; 3) Swinging your arms forward and backward; 4) Rolling your neck and shoulders slowly; 5) Turning your waist and hips in circles. — Warming up makes your body nice and warm and ready to move without getting hurt.

  3. Lead the warm-up and stretching exercises for your Unit on at least three different occasions.

    Answer: How to do it: with the help of your Counselor, stand in front of your Unit on three different meetings. Each time, show 2 or 3 warm-up exercises (like jumping jacks and running in place) and some gentle stretches, counting out loud so everyone can follow along. Do the movements together with your friends so they can follow you. — Leading the warm-up helps you learn the exercises well and gain the courage to teach.

  4. Perform the following movements accurately:
    • Roll (sideways) on the floor;
    • Do sideways turns (on hands and feet) - ("cartwheel");
    • Do somersaults;
    • Two different types of jumps;
    • Do a handstand, supported on your hands;
    • Walk across a balance beam, there and back.

    Answer: How to do it (always on a soft mat and with an adult nearby): 1) Side roll: lie on the floor and roll your whole body, stretched out, from one side to the other; 2) Cartwheel: with your arms and legs open, spin to the side resting on one hand, then the other, and land on your feet; 3) Forward roll: crouch down, tuck your chin to your chest, and roll forward resting on your hands; 4) Jumps: do two kinds, like a jump with your feet together and a jump on one leg only; 5) Handstand resting on your hands: ask the adult to hold your legs while you rest your hands on the floor; 6) Balance beam: walk slowly with your arms open along a very low beam, going there and back. — Practicing each movement carefully and with an adult's support makes you strong, balanced, and safe.

  5. Take part in a physical test suited to you, organized by the Club or the municipality.

    Answer: How to do it: ask your director or counselor to sign you up for a children's physical event, like a little race, a games day, or a gymnastics circuit at the Club or in your town. Train beforehand, go well rested and well fed, and take part having fun and doing your best — finishing is already a victory! — Taking part in an event shows everything you have trained and teaches you to try hard with joy.
