Carpenter Honor

Recreational Activities

Requirements

  1. Explain what a carpenter does.

    Answer: A carpenter is the person who works with wood. He cuts, measures, sands and joins pieces of wood to build and fix things, like furniture, doors, roofs and toys. — The carpenter has the skill to shape wood to create useful objects for people.

  2. Write down what the carpenter did in the following verses:
    • Genesis 6:14-16;
    • Exodus 30:1-3;
    • 2 Samuel 5:11.

    Answer: 1) Genesis 6:14-16: Noah received an order from God to build a great wooden ark (cypress wood), to save his family and the animals from the flood. 2) Exodus 30:1-3: an altar of acacia wood, covered with gold, was made to burn incense in the tabernacle (the tent for worshiping God). 3) 2 Samuel 5:11: carpenters sent by Hiram, king of Tyre, built a house (a palace) of wood for King David. — In each passage the Bible shows important works made of wood: the ark, the altar and the king's palace.

  3. Identify the basic tools for working with wood, explain what they do, and how to care for them.

    Answer: Basic tools: the saw is used to cut wood; the hammer is used to drive in nails and pull them out; the tape measure (or ruler) is used to measure; the pencil is used to mark; the sandpaper is used to make the wood smooth; the screwdriver is used to tighten screws; and the clamp is used to hold the piece firmly. To take care of the tools: keep them clean and dry in a safe place, always with the help of an adult, away from moisture so they do not rust. — Each tool has a job and, when well cared for and dry, it lasts much longer and is safer to use.

  4. Mention three products that a carpenter can make or manufacture.

    Answer: A carpenter can make many things out of wood, for example: 1) a chair; 2) a table; 3) a door. He can also make beds, shelves, toys, and birdhouses. — Everything made of wood that we use at home can be made by a carpenter.

  5. Visit one of the following places:
    • Lumberyard;
    • Carpentry shop;
    • Joinery/woodworking shop.

    Answer: With an adult, choose a place (a lumberyard, a carpentry shop, or a woodworking shop) and arrange the visit. There, look at the types of wood, the tools, and how the people work. Ask questions politely, always stay close to the adult for safety, and afterward, tell about or draw what you liked seeing the most. — Visiting up close helps the child understand how woodwork really happens.

  6. Make one of the following wooden objects, using the carpenter's tools:
    • Birdhouse or bird feeder;
    • Key holder;
    • Napkin holder.

    Answer: Choose an object (for example, a key holder) and make it with the help of an adult. Simple steps: 1) ask an adult for pieces of wood and measure with the tape measure; 2) the adult helps cut the wood to the right size; 3) sand the edges well until they are smooth; 4) join the parts with glue or small nails (the adult hammers); 5) let it dry and, if you want, paint and decorate it. Always use the tools carefully and close to the adult. — Building an object with your own hands teaches the carpenter's skill in a hands-on way.

  7. Talk about Jesus as a Carpenter and what His work in carpentry was like.

    Answer: Before He began to teach and help people, Jesus worked as a carpenter in the town of Nazareth, together with Joseph, the husband of Mary. The Bible calls Jesus a carpenter (Mark 6:3). In the carpentry shop, He used wood and tools to make and repair furniture, doors, and work tools, always with care and honesty. This teaches us that working well and with dedication pleases God. — Jesus valued working with His hands, showing that serving others well is important to God.
