Requirements

  1. Know what guidelines a Christian should use when choosing music to listen to and to sing.

    Answer: Lyrics that glorify God and edify. Rhythm without agitation/sensuality. Avoid violence, drugs, sex, or the occult. Philippians 4:8 (pure, just, and lovely). Evaluate the message before the style. — White ('Education', p.167) teaches that music is a spiritual channel. The Seventh-day Adventist Church Music Manual (2010) details criteria. Adventists avoid heavy rock, explicit funk, and profane reggae. The Adventist hymnal (8 books) is a reference. Hillsong has accepted material. Biblical criterion: Colossians 3:16 (sing with grace).

  2. Identify six musical instruments:
    • Visually;
    • Through the sound they emit.

    Answer: 1) Visually: by the shape and the way of playing, you can recognize each instrument. Guitar (a wooden box with plucked strings), piano (a large keyboard), drum kit (a set of drums and cymbals played with drumsticks), violin (small, played with a bow resting on the shoulder), flute (a thin tube played sideways or from the front), and saxophone (a curved metal instrument with keys). 2) Through the sound they produce: each instrument has its own recognizable timbre. Guitar (a soft, plucked sound), piano (a broad and full sound, high and low), drums (a strong, percussive, rhythmic sound), violin (a high, continuous sound from the bow), flute (a pure, light wind sound), and saxophone (a full-bodied, velvety brass-wind sound). — Instrumental families: strings (bowed/plucked), wind (woodwind/brass), percussion, keyboard. Stradivari (1644-1737) made legendary violins. Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in 1846. The grand piano (Steinway) is a reference. The modern drum kit was standardized by Ludwig (~1909). Apps like Yousician train recognition.

  3. Put together an album or make a poster with musical instruments.

    Answer: With an adult: 1) Look for pictures of musical instruments in magazines, flyers, or print them from the internet. 2) Cut them out and glue them onto a poster or notebook (your album). 3) Write the name of each instrument under its picture. 4) Show your album or poster to the club. — ABNT NBR 6022 standardizes presentation. Orchestral family: strings + woodwinds + brass + percussion. Apps like Canva, PowerPoint, and Pinterest make assembly easier. Free images on Pixabay and Wikimedia Commons. The club can print 1m×70cm at a popular print shop for ~R$30. Present it at a club meeting.

  4. Know the names of three musical instruments mentioned in the Bible.

    Answer: Harp (David, 1 Samuel 16:23). Trumpet/shofar (Jericho, Joshua 6). Tambourine (Miriam, Exodus 15:20). Others: lute, psaltery, cymbals. Music was central in the worship of Israel. — The shofar (ram's horn) is still played in synagogues on Yom Kippur. David's harp (kinor) had 10 strings. The psaltery (nevel) is lower-pitched. The tambourine (tof) was used at festivals. 1 Chronicles 15:16 lists the instruments of the tabernacle. Psalm 150 lists 8 instruments for praise (the end of the psalter).

  5. Play a piece on the instrument you are studying at a Club or church program; or sing a solo.

    Answer: With an adult's help: 1) Choose a simple song to play on an instrument you are learning, or to sing on your own (a solo). 2) Practice a lot at home until you feel confident. 3) Perform it in a club or church program. — A Christian solo is a devotional moment. The voice needs warm-up (5 min of vocalizing). The instrument needs tuning (apps like Tuner Lite). Posture: firm feet, relaxed shoulders, looking at the audience occasionally. Adventist repertoire: the Adventist Hymnal (~700 hymns), Voice of Prophecy. Microphone 5cm from the mouth.

  6. Participate in a group of singers, presenting two songs at a special program.

    Answer: With an adult: 1) Join a group of singers (from the club, church, or school). 2) Rehearse two songs together. 3) Perform both songs in a special program. — SATB is the classic division of a choir. 'Arautos do Rei' (Heralds of the King) is a reference Adventist group (1944). The hymnal has hymns in 4 voices. Small vocal groups (1-on-1) only need tuning and simple harmony. An individual or collective (boom) microphone. Special program: the Lord's Supper (4x/year), baptisms, Holy Week.

  7. Attend a concert, recital, or special presentation by an instrumentalist or instrumental group.

    Answer: With an adult: 1) Go to a concert, recital, or special performance by an instrumentalist or musical group (at church, school, or in town). 2) Pay attention to the instruments and the songs. 3) Afterward, tell someone which part you liked most. — The Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, Sala São Paulo, and Cidade das Artes (Rio de Janeiro) have classical concerts. UNASP-EC has a student orchestra. Affordable tickets ~R$10-30 or free at university studios. Streaming: OSESP's Concerto Espresso, official YouTube. Note everything in the Pathfinder's diary for submission.
